Forget me not - Headford Lace Project

'Forget Me Not’, remembers thirteen Headford girls aged 15-19 who left Ireland for Australia under the Orphan Emigration Scheme. Filmed in the Headford area and featuring local teenagers, this film humanises the historical workhouse passenger lists.

Focusing on empathy to communicate how brave theses young girls were to leave their homeland and escape the workhouses and the devastation of the Great Famine in Ireland, ’Forget Me Not’ is a contemporary poetic response to these historic events by visual artist Jojo Hynes.

The bonnets in the film were created from a callout by Headford Lace Project in response to a project by artist Christina Henri from Tasmania. This film was commissioned by Headford Lace Project through Culture Night funding from Galway County Council.

This film was video mapped on to The Anglers Rest in Headford on Culture Night 2019. Screened as part of The Headford Lace Project’s ‘Lace Notes and Other Stories’ Concert.

The film was also selected to be shown at The Loop a large-scale outdoor public screen located Hobart, Tasmania, Australia managed by the City of Hobart's Public Art team.

Fulfilling her true potential

I take inspiration from different parts of Granuaile’s inspiring story, her exploits at sea and her homeland in Clew Bay to create my artworks. In this work I use distinctly feminine materials but any assumptions of weakness these materials might invoke are quashed by their implied use. I put Granuaile to the forefront of the art works and, in doing so, I hope to undo the way she was cruelly written out of history by male scholars.

She was dead set on a life of adventure

installation: video projection, colour, sound & sculptures

The dialogue in the soundtrack purposely omits Grainne Mhaols name, thereby referencing the way she was cruelly written out of history by male scholars. Instead her voice has been replaced by numerous female voices that refer to her as ‘she’.

The sculptural ‘islands’ and ‘boats’ are made from distinctly feminine materials but any assumptions of weakness these materials might invoke are quashed by the contrasting rough and ready textures of the found natural materials. The aim is to humorously breach the boundaries of gender bias and imagination.

Triangular Brush says: "The world needs more Heroines!” Impatient for a new Heroine to emerge we have created Síobhan Ní Eidhin; a legendary female character for our times. 'The Legend of Síobhan Ní Eidhin' is 'Heroine as Art Event’, with rumour, hearsay and stories as our content, and procession, souvenirs and posters as our medium
